Mulch Calculator
Find out how much mulch you need for your garden beds. Enter the area and depth to get cubic yards plus the number of 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft bags.
Mulch calculator
Volume is exact geometry. Weights and bag counts assume typical densities and bag yields — treat them as an estimate, not a quote.
How to use it
- Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
- Set the depth in inches.
- Pick the material, then read off the cubic yards (and bags or tons) you need.
The calculator multiplies area by depth for an exact volume, then converts to cubic yards and estimates weight or bag count from typical material figures.
Frequently asked questions
- How much mulch do I need?
- Multiply your bed area by the depth (2–3 inches is typical). A 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs about 0.9 cubic yards, or roughly 13 two-cubic-foot bags.
- How many bags of mulch are in a yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet — about 14 of the 2 cu ft bags or 9 of the 3 cu ft bags.
- How deep should mulch be?
- 2–3 inches suppresses weeds and retains moisture without smothering plant roots.
