Paver Calculator
Work out how many pavers you need for a patio, walkway, or driveway. Enter the area and your paver size to get the paver count, including a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
Paver calculator
The paver count covers the area plus your waste allowance (5% is typical for a straight pattern, 10% for herringbone or diagonal). Buy a few spares from the same lot for repairs.
How it's calculated
We convert your paver size into the area one paver covers — (length × width) ÷ 144 to go from square inches to square feet — divide the patio area by that, add a waste allowance, and round up. For a base under the pavers, see the gravel and sand calculators.
Frequently asked questions
- How many pavers do I need?
- Divide the patio area by the area of one paver, then add waste. For 12 × 12 in pavers that is one paver per square foot, so a 120 ft² patio needs about 126 pavers with 5% waste.
- How much waste should I add for pavers?
- About 5% for a straight or running-bond pattern and 10% for herringbone or any diagonal layout, which produces more cut pieces.
- How much paver base and sand do I need?
- Plan on about 4–6 inches of compacted gravel base plus 1 inch of bedding sand under pavers. Use the gravel and sand calculators for those quantities.
